Current Mobile Phone Holder Trends

Date Posted:10 July 2019

Back when phones were just phones (remember that?), used only for making calls and sending texts, there wasn’t much need for anyone to have a mobile phone holder. But that all began to change in the late noughties when smartphones became ubiquituous. Bright touch screens are just perfect for all sorts of things, some of which you need to do hands free. Phones make fantastic recipe books, for example, and can be great to gather around and watch videos with friends. Smartphone are also brilliant navigation aids in cars and on bikes.

Designers are getting increasingly good at coming up with intelligent, functional, stylish ways to keep your mobile phone held in place and easy to use safely while you’re driving or riding. In the car in particular, it’s vital that you have a safe holder that won’t allow your phone to slip onto your lap or feet and become a hazard. You also need to be sure that you’ll be able to see it easily at all times, so you’re not tempted to try and adjust it while you’re on the road.

Magnetic holders

Getting your phone into its dashboard holder can be tricky. If you use a bumper, you’ll often need to take it out of it, which can be irritating for short journeys. Magnetic holders make it super easy and very quick to attach your phone in the perfect position on your dashboard. You’ll be ready to go in a second. They’re also usually universal, so they’re ideal if you share your car with another driver who has a different phone to you.

Vent holders

Vent holders fit neatly into your car air vent, rather than using suction or having to be screwed in place like many holders are. They’re generally cheap and are very easy to fit, so they could just be for you if you don’t need to use your holder all the time. You can simply take them out of the glove box and stick them up when needed.

Extra-tough bicycle mounts

If you’re happier on two wheels than four, you’ll know how useful it can be to have your phone mounted on your handlebars. There are lots of basic, flimsy mounts out there, but if you’re a serious rider, you’ll need something tough that will protect your phone from falls and bumps.

This is especially true if you’re riding off-road, but city cyclists can benefit from tougher mounts too, to protect from the weather as well as falls. The new generation of bike mounts have hard, waterproof cases that you can use your touchscreen through, and will stand up to any weather and whatever punishment you put your bike (and your legs) through.

And for the back seat drivers...

Not all phone holders are designed for the adults at the front of the car. If you’ve ever travelled with little people, you’ll know how important it is to keep them occupied while you’re on the road. Bored kids are whingy kids, and that’s distracting and dangerous while you’re driving.

Headrest mounts like these are designed to allow little ones to watch videos while you drive. They’re the modern equivalent of a toy car wheel stuck to the seat and they’re much better than crayons and paper at keeping them busy for a few hours. They’re also much less messy!
